Standard King Beds vs. California King Beds

Modern king-size leather bed
The standard for ultimate comfort has been set pretty high with the invention of king beds. Unmatched by even a full bed or queen bed, the large size of king beds allows sleepers to spread out in complete comfort, whether or not they have a bed companion. If you are picking out a brand-new king bed, there are a few questions you'll want to settle. Are you looking for a spring mattress, pillowtop mattress or a memory foam mattress? What brand is best for you? Maybe the most common question is whether you would like a standard king-size mattress or California king mattress. Before you make that decision, here are some comparisons that might help you come to an informed choice.

Choosing a Bed Size:

  1. Dimensions: Obviously, the largest consideration before choosing a king or California king bed is their respective sizes. A standard king bed is 76 inches by 80 inches while a California king mattress 72 inches by 85 inches. A standard king mattress is four inches wider but five inches shorter than a California king mattress. After you know the dimensions, it is just a matter of what size and shape you prefer.
  2. Consider room dimensions: Before you commit to a king-size bed, make sure you check the dimensions of your room. If your room isn't long enough to comfortably fit a California king mattress and bed frame, you might do better with the shorter, but wider, standard king size. When you are measuring the room, make sure to consider the size of the king bed frame. If it is very ornate, it might take up a little more room than a plain platform bed frame or other basic styles.
  3. Bed mates: If you aren't the only person sleeping on your bed, you might value a wider king-size mattress over the longer California king. When it comes to personal space, a king-size bed might be the best bet. However, if you don't mind lying close to your bed companion, it might not be such a big deal which mattress you choose. On the other hand, if you are sleeping alone, the width of a standard king mattress might be a little impractical.Home Furniture
  4. Personal height: If you are a very tall person, then you are going to want the added length of a California king bed. There is nothing worse than having your feet propped up on the footboard and your head pressed against a king headboard. Go with a California king mattress.
