Standard King Beds vs. California King Beds

Modern king-size leather bed
The standard for ultimate comfort has been set pretty high with the invention of king beds. Unmatched by even a full bed or queen bed, the large size of king beds allows sleepers to spread out in complete comfort, whether or not they have a bed companion. If you are picking out a brand-new king bed, there are a few questions you'll want to settle. Are you looking for a spring mattress, pillowtop mattress or a memory foam mattress? What brand is best for you? Maybe the most common question is whether you would like a standard king-size mattress or California king mattress. Before you make that decision, here are some comparisons that might help you come to an informed choice.

Choosing a Bed Size:

  1. Dimensions: Obviously, the largest consideration before choosing a king or California king bed is their respective sizes. A standard king bed is 76 inches by 80 inches while a California king mattress 72 inches by 85 inches. A standard king mattress is four inches wider but five inches shorter than a California king mattress. After you know the dimensions, it is just a matter of what size and shape you prefer.
  2. Consider room dimensions: Before you commit to a king-size bed, make sure you check the dimensions of your room. If your room isn't long enough to comfortably fit a California king mattress and bed frame, you might do better with the shorter, but wider, standard king size. When you are measuring the room, make sure to consider the size of the king bed frame. If it is very ornate, it might take up a little more room than a plain platform bed frame or other basic styles.
  3. Bed mates: If you aren't the only person sleeping on your bed, you might value a wider king-size mattress over the longer California king. When it comes to personal space, a king-size bed might be the best bet. However, if you don't mind lying close to your bed companion, it might not be such a big deal which mattress you choose. On the other hand, if you are sleeping alone, the width of a standard king mattress might be a little impractical.Home Furniture
  4. Personal height: If you are a very tall person, then you are going to want the added length of a California king bed. There is nothing worse than having your feet propped up on the footboard and your head pressed against a king headboard. Go with a California king mattress.

Best Rooms for a Computer Armoire:

Computer armoire with books and CDs
If you have a home office you know that computer armoires are one of the most versatile pieces of furniture available. Ideal not only as home office furniture, they can also be used to organize media collections, stockpile craft supplies and yes, house a computer and the associated gear necessary for a satisfying home office experience. Don't limit yourself by thinking of a computer armoire only as a glorified desk; consider putting armoires to more creative uses in every room in your home.

Placing a Computer Armoire:

  1. Kitchen: An armoire can double as a mini pantry or act as a separate cooking station. Keep all your baking supplies, like cupcake tins and vanilla, in one place so you can bake on whim or keep spices and seasonings within easy reach by alphabetizing them in convenient cubby holes.
  2. Office: Computer armoires are popular in offices because they're practical, attractive and easy to use. Tuck your computer out of the way when it's not in use and keep the printer, cables and other accessories close at hand.Laptop Desk
  3. Craft room: A new use for computer armoires is to put them in a craft room and stock them with supplies. The shelves and cabinets are perfect for organizing fabric, yarn, paper and even things like glitter and other embellishments. Keep your crafting contained without cramping your style!
  4. Bedroom: Armoires have always been popular in bedrooms. They're a great place to store extra blankets and pillows, and there are armoires not specifically designed for computers that are great for clothing.
  5. Family room: A computer armoire in the family room can house a computer, but that computer can act as so much more. Stream TV shows; watch instant movies; even play video games as a family. Then tuck everything safely out of sight. Use bottom cabinets to hold board games and other family-friendly activities.Laptop Desk
  6. Bathroom: The bathroom might seem like an unlikely place for a computer armoire, but if you find one that fits, you've added valuable storage space to an otherwise barren room. Keep fresh towels, toilet paper and even cleaning supplies out of sight until they're needed, but know they're within reach when you need them.Laptop Desk
  7. Playroom: Put one in a kid's bedroom or playroom and keep the clutter to a minimum by hiding toys, games and stuffed animals behind closed armoire doors. You help your kids learn to put things away as they use them and encourage them to keep their own areas tidy.
